My travels so far: Sorrento, Italy (by Sam)

I’m in my mid twenties, and went straight from school into Uni, and from there straight into full time work. Although I wouldn’t be where I am today if I didn’t follow that path, I do sometimes wish I had taken some time out to travel in between. I love to explore new places; there is so much of the world I would love to see! But that list can wait for another post.

Luckily, I have another half who shares my enthusiasm for adventure! And top of Chris’ list was Italy. I have to say, it wasn’t top of my own list of places to visit, but its picturesque landscapes and mouthwatering food wasn’t something I was going to turn my nose up to!

Flying into Naples with Vesuvius in the background

We settled on Sorrento because the area looked beautiful, there were some brilliant reviews online, and because of the number of excursions that were available in that vicinity. We aren’t really the sit at the poolside or on the beach sunbathing type of couple, so that suited us perfectly!

The view from our hotel terrace, Vesuvius across the bay of Naples

One thing we both really wanted to do while we were there was to climb Vesuvius – and it did not disappoint! In fact, we both loved it so much from the top that we climbed it twice!

We didn’t think our first visit was going to be very good; there was grey clouds all day up to that point. But as we started to climb and got closer to the top, the clouds started to thin out, and the sun broke through to reveal some amazing scenery across the bay of Naples. It was a heady feeling to be in the clouds!

The tours that we took to Vesuvius also took us to Pompeii and Herculaneum across 2 days. I would definitely recommend a guide for Pompeii, if only for the sheer size of it! The history behind some of the artifacts, and even just the cobbled streets, was captivating.

But the unexpected highlight of this trip was a short ferry ride to the island of Capri. It had the most spectacular views I have ever had the good fortune of seeing; it literally took my breathe away.

The sea went on for as far as the eye could see on the horizon. And the sea itself was the clearest blue! The restaurants on the island boasted of all the celebrities that have visited, Mariah Carey and Uma Thurman being some of the names I can remember of the top of my head.

Well, those are my highlights from one of the best places I have been lucky enough to visit so far!

As Anna said last time, we said we would keep this short, and I feel I may have waffled a bit! But I could also go on and on and on…

Please feel free to share your own adventures, or ask any questions about the area if you have any ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Iโ€™ve done exactly the same as you, straight from school, to college, to uni, to work! I totally regret not travelling, same amps my other half. Weโ€™ve spoken recently about as of next year taking time to travel places, and because of this post, Sorrento is on the list! Lovely photos! Xx

    1. So glad Sorrento has made it to your list! It is such an amazing place. We booked the trip last March as it was pretty much half price during the May bank holiday. Traffic on the bank holiday in Italy was a nightmare – but they had a firework display over the marina we stayed near which was amazing! Hope you have a brill time next year getting to visit new places! X

  3. I went to Sorrento in year 9 with school and it was great, although when we did Vesuvius we couldn’t see ANYTHING and then there was a huge hailstorm so we all had to run back down, good memories if not good views ๐Ÿ˜‰

    1. We did a lot of the tours with our holiday reps in the hotel, and this tour clashed with another we really wanted to do so we decided to miss it ๐Ÿ˜” if I ever go back I would love to see it though as the views look spectacular! Thanks very much for the read ๐Ÿ˜Š
