Cinema Round Up no.2 – Latest Movies I’ve Seen (by Anna)

It’s that time again for another instalment of our Cinema Round Up series.

It’s actually been a quiet movie month recently so this won’t be a very long post. Hang on…who am I kidding, I love to waffle on and on…and on… Anyways… here we go;

Game Night IMDb rating 7.4

I went and saw this with my guy friend. I mentioned in my last Cinema Round Up Post that we usually go and see horror movies. But lately we have branched out a little and are watching other types of movies as well.

We were choosing between this one and the new Tomb Raider movie. Being Swedish I like to support my fellow Swedes. Alicia Vikander, the new Lara Croft, is Swedish 🙂 I know what you’re thinking… but we are not all blonde ok! hahahaha

We however ended up picking Game Night as the trailer looked great and we both really like Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams.

We thought the idea behind this movie was really different. The premise is that a group of couples friends meet regularly for game nights. Like pictionary or charades and stuff like that. They take part in this mystery night that the brother of Jason Bateman’s character arranges. The brothers have had a lifelong competition of always trying to best each other in everything. But low and behold, it turns into a real and not pretend mystery! Lots of things go wrong (of course, it is a comedy after all) and we did laugh out loud quite a few times. It has some quite funny banter and a few action scenes. There are also some plots twists hidden through out for good measure.

But, Why oh Why do the movie makers put all the funny bits in the trailers?! This is becoming a running theme unfortunately. I think I’m going to stay away from trailers at all costs because I don’t want to ruin a movie. Haven’t they ever heard of leaving a little something to the imagination?

It wasn’t a movie either of us walked out of at the end thinking “wow, that was so funny!” It was a little weird and I felt they could have done more. They could have kept the charachters in the dark for much longer than they did with certain plots. But on the bright side, we didn’t at any point clock watch or feel like abandoning the movie half way through so that’s good right. I would say go see it but with the caveat, don’t expect too much because of who is in it. OR, stay away from trailers and go see it and you will probably find it very funny!

Tomb Raider IMDb rating 6.8

I went to see this with my guy friend. I absolutely loved the other older Lara Croft films. I would describe them as ‘park your brain at the door’ movies. The kind you just sit down with a huge popcorn (salty sweet mix – sounds strange but its lovely! give it a go) and just enjoy for the cheesy movie it is, no thought power required. This re-boot of Lara Croft stars Alicia Vikander and I would say this is not the Lara Croft we know from any previous movies. In this film Lara Croft is a strong and independent woman who works as a bike messenger. Not the mansion living silver spoon woman from the previous films. I’d say this film is set before we see her become the double-gun-strapped-to-her-leg-Lara that we recognize. It has just the right amount of action in it and just the right amount of flash backs. The flash backs tell us how she was raised and lays the ground work basically.

I enjoyed this movie a lot. I can see the potential this re-boot has and I can’t wait for the next one. I’m told it is very close to the new Lara Croft games. I haven’t played a Lara Croft game since I was about 19… in other words a very long time ago hahahaha but I would recommend this movie for sure.

Pacific Rim: UPRISING IMDb Rating 5.9

I went to watch this with my husband. The weather wasn’t the best so we decided to do a double whammy – 2 movies in one day. This could get pricey if you don’t ration your popcorn and sweets properly to last through 2 movies hahah

I enjoyed the first one is this franchise quite a lot actually back in 2013 (wow, didn’t realise how long ago the first one came out!) because it was different to other films around at the time. Usually sequels are a poor imitation of the original. I must say I really liked this sequel. Mind you, that might be because I don’t really remember the first one too well but never mind hahahha I thought casting John Boyega as Jake Pentecost was a good move. I like him in this film. He also stars in Star Wars but I’m not too keen on his character in that. This movie however is about monsters from another world coming to attack us through our oceans. Peace has reigned for 10 years and everything has been quiet….until now! It has lots of action and good CGI. Hubby found the film ‘meh’ but I enjoyed watching it. Speaking of… you can always tell if I’m enjoying a movie or now by how many times I look at my watch hahahah a little tip for you there should you find yourself at the cinema with me.

A Quiet Place IMDb Rating 8.1

I’ve wanted to see this for a while and so has my husband so yesterday we decided to go despite the early evening being lovely and sunny. There was hardly anyone in the cinema. I think most people were making the most of the mild warm spring evening by having BBQs and garden parties.

This movie is supposed to be of the Drama, Horror and Sci-Fi genre. I really wanted to like this but I found it to be rather boring unfortunately… and frustrating! I felt I couldn’t eat any of my popcorn or the cinema sweets for fear of making too much noise, because the film was SO QUIET… I mean yeah, there’s a hint in the title of it but jeez…. there were hardly any spoken words in it. I can see what they were trying to go for with this movie and it is right up my street. It just didn’t hit the mark for me.

Emily Blunt did a fantastic job as did her husband John Krasinki. He directed it as well as starred in it.

I liked how the story just started at day 89, they threw you right in. There was no lengthy explaining as to what happened. There are a few newspaper clippings that we can see the headlines of dotted about but generally we are left to our own imagination. This is a good thing in my eyes as we, the audience, get a chance to use our brains for a change. Having said that, I did do a lot of clock watching… I wouldn’t say to go watch this movie at the cinema, I’d wait for it to come out on Netflix/iMovies/Amazon.

What have you seen at the cinema lately that you can recommend to see or even to stay away from? Have you seen any of the movies in my post? What did you think of them? I’d love to hear from you so please do leave a comment!

Until Next Time,

  1. Love seeing film reviews, especially of ones I’m unsure of. I’ve been intrigued by A Quiet Place but I’m gonna wait to watch it like you suggested because I hate being stuck in a cinema if I’m not enjoying the film, I can’t imagine one without much talking! Did it have many jump scares? Great reviews! 🙂

  2. I haven’t been to the movies in a really long time and I was just recently thinking that I should 😀 Totally inspired now to really go after reading your post haha. I used to be a big Tomb Raider fan when I was a kid so would love to see this one. And I totally get the sweet/salty popcorn mix 😀 I love it as well xxx
