A Weekend in Stockholm (day 1)

Anna being a Swede living in England, it’s much easier for Sam to show Anna her home town than the other way around. But we decided to take the plunge, spread our wings, and take a plane trip across the pond so that Anna could show off the city she grew up in;  Stockholm. Anna is extremely proud of her home roots, and wanted Sam to see the City in all its glory in the summer sun. We could have made this a road trip, but it would have been about 20 hours worth of driving…No Thank You!

We spent a long weekend there, flew over at silly o’clock in the morning with British Airways on the Friday and flew back on the Monday. A fleeting visit if you will. A city break on steroids hahaha

We started off our long weekend with a day in the Old Town – Gamla Stan.

The old Town small narrow cobbled streets

We went with another friend of ours and we had all sat down previously and figured out our daily itinerary. The first day, our arrival day, was meant to be a quiet one but turned in to 7.5km day worth of walking, ie 12,500 steps!

Stockholm was founded in 1252 and this is the original part, hence the name! It’s full of cobbled tiny narrow streets. So cute! The picture below shows the narrowest street of them all. Unfortunately it’s full of graffiti…

Sweden is a coffee culture, a ‘Fika’ culture. They are all about having a coffee with friends, enjoying a good chat and some baked goods (cinnamon buns lol!) and watching the world go by. That is the meaning of ‘Fika’ and there isn’t a word for it in English. Read Anna’s post here to find out more.

Just look at these cute coffee shops that you can find at the big square in the old town called Stortorget.

This super old phone box we found was a real hit with the tourists as we were all wanting our photos taken in there.

We also visited Storkyrkan Cathedral in the Old Town. They have this amazing wooden carving of St. George slaying the dragon.

We were getting a bit peckish at this point and decided to seek out somewhere to eat. There are plenty of waffle places down the main strip in the old town. We picked this Ben & Jerry one as the display of fresh strawberries looked so yummy an inviting! Plus you know….Ben & Jerry’s !!!

At this point we decided to start heading home. We’d been up since 2 am and walked a lot so were a tad tired but at least now we were fed hhahaha

Until Our Next Adventure,

  1. The waffles look so good! It is always best having someone who knows the area show you around because then you can discover places that you perhaps would not have known about otherwise and also avoids you wasting time having to navigate or come up with places to visit. x

    1. The waffles were amazing 🤤🤤 and with the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream on top – I was in heaven! It was so good to have Anna show us around, as we were coming up with a list of what we all wanted to she, Anna was able to say what was good and not so good on her visits in the past, and then make a plan of what we would do each day as she knew what was close to each other! It worked really well I think 🙂 Sam x

  3. I visited Stockholm in 2017 and loved it so much! I visited it in winter and would love to experience the city in summer as well. I also think the Fika moment should be universal haha. Lovelovelove cinnamon rolls ❤
