I have a love hate relationship with makeup. I love buying it and having it but am not very skilled at using it. I am not good enough to do all the makeup looks I keep seeing online on insta. The cut crease, the baking, the contouring. I mean when the fluck did every girl and woman on the planet become a makeup artist? This post is not just about my latest payday purchases, it’s also from the heart and my feelings laid out on paper/the screen. Read on if you want to dig a littler deeper than my skin in to who I am.
I don’t feel I have the perfect face for makeup. I have hooded eyes which has always been a thorn in my side, combination skin that’s oily with enlarged pores but with dry patches. I also have the dreaded 90s eyebrows of barely any brows at all. Here is a look of me with no makeup by the way should you wish to see. It’s from our first ever blogpost when we had some time with a Bobbi Brown pro artist. Some before and after shots of yours truly.
I’m always on the hunt for that special product that will make me look beautiful. Make me feel pretty like I think all the other women are. It must be a wonderful feeling for a makeup artist to see a woman’s confidence grow and grow as they leave their makeup chair with wide smiles on their faces.
In case you hadn’t guessed, my self esteem is low, has always been low. I don’t often feel pretty. My mum and my husband would of course disagree, they think I’m beautiful. It’s an accomplishment in itself that I run this blog with Sam posting photos of myself for the whole world to see. In my mind, I am the photographer not the model. I am Swedish, I was born in Stockholm, Sweden and let me tell you; Swedish women are absolutely stunning. I feel subpar next to them all. My biggest mistake here of course is to compare myself to others.
Maybe this is why I keep buying makeup all the time, to help me feel pretty just like them. Don’t get me started on age either, I’ll be 39 on November 25th. So this naturally is starting to take it’s toll on my skin’s youth… I’m told I look younger than I am which is always nice to hear. My skin is starting to tell another story though with the wrinkles that’s appearing on a daily basis. I think it is safe to say my birthday this year will be filled with lots of tears as I face the facts that this is the last time I’ll be turning 30 something. I am a full 12 years older than Sam… there’s some perspective for you lol
Beauty and confidence is an inside job of course – feeling pretty comes from within. It comes from being confident in who you are, having self worth in abundance and being happy with yourself just the way you are. Until I get there within myself I’m going to continue buying a lot of makeup hahahaha
So shall we get on with the show? The latest payday purchase! Actually that’s not wholly true, I have bought much more since…Oooops? so there will most definitely be another Payday Purchase Post next month, so keep your eyes out for that.
I’ll start with the Bobbi Brown Re-Touching Powder in Pink
I use this as a blusher. It has a beautiful tone to it and makes you look fresh (click here to read about it on their website). This pink is designed to counteract sallow undertones in alabaster to medium skin tones. I love Bobbi Brown because of their ethos of not changing your face shape or eye shape through cut crease or contouring and baking, but to subtly enhance the beauty you already have.
Next up is this Urban Decay setting spray duo. I’ve recently discovered setting sprays and so far I’ve purchased (also re-purcahsed) the MAC Fix+ Matte which I really like and thought I’d give this travel size duo a try. On my list to get at some point is the Mario Badescu spray as that has come highly recommended from a few sources (looking at you Karen hahah)
I found my makeup looked really good when I wore this. Like it melted beautifully in to my skin. I wore it for a few days and I hate to say it but I think it broke my skin out…. I will now only use it once in a while, not on consecutive days for that reason. You can find this online by clicking here. This duo came with the legendary urban decay best seller All-Nighter and is totally Vegan and obviously not tested on animals which is a Huge Plus! it claims to last for 16 hrs! I quote from their website below;
Our tested formula is suitable for all skin types (from oily skin to combination skin), is oil-free and paraben-free, and features patented Temperature Control Technology. Yep, this setting spray actually lowers the temperature of your makeup to keep foundation, eyeshadow, blush and concealer in place—even in hot and humid or cold and windy conditions. The result? Smoother-looking skin and vibrant makeup that lasts all day (or all night).
And it also came with the Re-Bound Collagen-infused Complexion Prep Priming Spray. The sales lady told me it contains fish protein so is not vegan like the All-Nighter Setting Spray. I used this on my bare face before applying my makeup then the all-nighter setting spray on top of my finished look. I must say that the staying power and the look of my make up whilst using these were superior to when I use the MAC Fix+. Unfortunately as I said earlier I think the break outs I got was from this… maybe it was too many layers on my face for my enlarged pores to cope with, I don’t know. I will absolutely use this set on special occasions! This is from their website about the Re-Bound Collagen-infused Complexion Prep Priming Spray, I quote;
I also got this strobe cream from MAC. I had previously bought the peach colour and thought I’d give this Pinklite a try, it’s the original strobe cream.
On their website they say, and I quote;
The ultimate quick fix for the skin. Super-powered with potent botanicals to refresh and moisten. Boosts the look of dull, flat or tired-looking skin with nutritious vitamins and a mega-dose of green tea. Brightens and clarifies with iridescent particles and antioxidants. Enhances the effects of light on all skin in all lighting conditions from sunlight to spotlight.
I use it as a moisturiser along with some other MAC products because that is what the amazingly talented Guy taught me during my makeup lesson with him which you can read about here. It turns out this is one of our most popular posts on the blog!
Last but not least, I got this gorgeous patentpolish lip pencil from MAC in the shade ‘Spontaneous’. It’s super close to my own lip colour which is exactly what I like. I don’t think nude lipsticks suit me, I like a bit of colour pop on my lips (think bold red or lilac etc) or my own colour just slightly enhanced.
According to the MAC website this Patentpolish lip pencil provides instant softness and conditions lips like a balm. I totally agree! If you want to check this product out on the MAC website just click here.
That wraps up the post today. I hope you enjoyed it. If you have used any of these products or have other recommendations for me please do leave me a comment. I would as usual love to hear from you all
Until Next Time,
